Fighting the cold season with quick, cheap remedies that work.
It always starts with a sore throat. Darn that scratchy, tight warning of the misery to come!
Everyone has a favorite homemade remedy or trick for fighting a cold, some are reasonable, some…not so much. But really, when your at your wits’ end with getting your trash kicked, maybe you are willing to stick garlic cloves in your ears or drink garlic, onion sriracha juice? But first try this:
Cold and cough remedies we swear by
- A warm mug of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of raw honey. If you can handle the heat, throw in a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper for good measure. Not only will this soothe your throat, but it will decrease inflammation, fight off phlegm and mucous. This antibacterial drink will put a pep back in your step in no time. A mug in the morning, a mug in the evening and if you can, throw one in at lunch for the triple threat.
- Garlic. Okay, so we aren’t going to tell you to stick it in your ears or juice it to drink (but you can), but we stand by cutting a clove into four or more pill-sized pieces and swallowing with water. Garlic’s powerful antibacterial properties boost the immune system and cut down recovery time and if taken in time, it can prevent colds altogether.
- Vicks. Alrighty, so it’s not the most natural but is a little secret weapon for the awful night coughing that prevents much needed recovery sleep. Sleep is TOP when it comes to feeling better and hey, you feet have seen way worse than Vicks now haven’t they?! Before climbing into bed rub Vicks on the soles of the feet and slip socks over it keep from making a mess. This trick works for all ages. Get ready for a Vicks comeback.
Remember to be proactive. At the first sign of a sore throat or runny nose get out your mug and garlic cloves and get sipping. Or even better, start when everyone around you is sneezing and coughing!
